Chipped paintwork, faded fabrics and blemishes all add  to the charm. The secret is to blend industrial elements with softer furnishings for a lived-in and comfortable scheme. Avoid mixing it with dark wood; instead opt for light walls and  woodwork coupled with an occasional splash of color.

A contemporary living room, for example, “might have fewer pieces in the room, but each of them have a more artistic or artisanal quality and high level of craftsmanship to them,” Sander says. “Typically I would define contemporary more as a blending of styles,” says Brad Ramsey, an interior designer based in Nashville. “It’s a little more eclectic, but it’s trend-forward, so contemporary is usually what’s on trend right now.” Ramsey grew up in a contemporary house outside of Atlanta that was often well-liked by visitors for its uniqueness. “It had tall pitched ceilings that are all cedar slats inside with skylights at the top,” he says. “And when I was growing up, everybody always loved coming over to my house.” Even though his parents purchased the home in the ’80s, it’s kept its contemporary status through thoughtful upgrades and changes throughout the years. “If it stays in the trends of when they bought it, then it no longer really stays in that contemporary feel; you have to keep updating it,” he says.

This means making any coffee table styling impactful, but leaving plenty of space on the table top for you to put everything on it that you need. There are so many alcove ideas you can use to make spaces feel more interesting, from clever shelving units to decor tricks. We love the simplicity of the treatment here, where a shallow alcove with few opportunities for effective storage is instead given a starring role with wallpaper. 'Ensuring a room has as much light in it as is possible is key to any home decor being successful,' says Jo Bailey, Homes & Gardens' Deputy Editor (Print) and stylist.

Never Stop Decorating

If the bones are timeless, then you can do anything you want with color and pattern to change up the look. Keep an eye out for special features in your home, and try to preserve them where you can. Stained glass windows, ornate trim, and built-in archways aren’t the kind of thing you’ll find everywhere, so try to integrate them into your décor scheme.

People are naturally drawn to gather round them, which means whoever is prepping food or cooking feels part of the action. Modern farmhouse style also celebrates the historic, reminding us of simpler times, without forcing us to give up any of the contemporary lifestyle elements to which we are accustomed. For me personally, my decorating style is all about using color and pattern whilst blending antiques with new pieces.

Natural Stone Slabs

In this space by interior designer Irene Gunter, curves are part of the room's architecture; in including them at the top of the room, they also serve to draw the eye upwards, enhancing the feeling of space. Designer Lara Hovanessian packed plenty of bold design elements into the powder room and adjacent lounge. A moody House of Hackney floral wall covering lines the dressing area, which leads to a powder room accented with a Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito II from Walnut Wallpaper.

Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents. Working with Jacqueline Black and Michelle Porreca, Williams brought in a Chinoiserie wall covering to give the space a garden-like atmosphere. They also installed a grass cloth ceiling treatment and sisal rug to add texture. Jerome Thiebault created a polished and petite bathroom complete with storage and a shower. Troweled cement plaster was applied to the walls, and handcrafted Zia tile adds pattern to the floor.

Some trending modern bohemian designs include those inspired from southwestern, Moroccan and tribal styles that may typically consist of animal hides, metallic accents and wood. While not technically an established design style, we list it because it’s a style people look for. There are styles that are minimalist such as modern and midcentury design styles. A few years ago I was under the impression a lot of homes embraced the Mediterranean style, but in actual fact, it’s not that widely used.

Often overlooked they can be useful for storage or for deep bedside tables, but we love when interior designers have fun with them, such as in this bedroom by interior designer Martin Brudnizki. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette.

Contemporary designers create designs that are more fluid, in the sense that they are according to the current, trending styles; however, they don’t resort to a particular style or design. These designers also have a great sense of what’s currently in style so their designs are constantly evolving and carry a very modern touch to them. Their designs are fresh, elegant and have a sense of simplicity in every style that they create. Unlike contemporary designers, they love adorning spaces; however, they do it with such skill and subtlety that you won’t even realize there is something “extra” in the design.

In fact, it’s very easy to confuse contemporary with transitional and in fact for both types it’s often easy to argue a particular interior design is one or the other. Vintage interior styling focuses on minimal clutter and puts forth a very clean, crisp, and classy display of furniture, decorative accents, and designs. These interiors also often include old frames and photographs that are usually black and white in order to give the entire space a very old yet stylish look. You may also see a variety of open shelves in most vintage designs that allow one to show off their classic vintage accessories and items. This take on the interior style and design follows the “Bauhaus principles” that make use of fluid lines, all-white color palettes, wide plank flooring and a strong focus on object proportions. The designers also ensure that they use playful accent colors, organic materials and gentle contours.
